Free is good!

Ruining it for the rest of us.

I would like to take this moment to visit the rights and wrongs in couponing. I know there are some people out there who do not under stand what it is to coupon, and then there are some people who totally abuse the privilege, and yes this is a Privilege not a right.

Couponing, is a good way to save yourself, money, it in no way saves time, it in fact takes up more of your free time, but if the ends justify the means then it is worth it. Coupons are sent out by the manufactures to help entice you to try, buy and keep buying their products. They send them in papers, by mail, in magazines and now online to print off. All coupons online have a print limit, it might be 1, 2 or 5, but they have a print limit. That does not mean by any way that you cant ask your friends or family, or even go to the library to print coupons.

That being said, if you take these printed out coupons and copy them it is STEALING, You may think, oh its just a few dollars, but when you do that.. since every coupon has its own distinct serial number.. you are causing the store you redeem it at to not get their money back from the manufacture. Even big time companies... will eventually stop accepting coupons that are printed out if enough people are stealing by copying. Don't ruin it for the rest of us, Coupon responsibly, and do it the right way.

That being said, Happy savings! new trip to savings in a few days!

A leap forward and then a back handed smash backwards!

With life it always seems that you take a giant step forward towards a goal then something happens and you have to take some steps backwards. This week I had a win which I will share with you all first, and then I had a few steps backwards.

Here we go with the win! A few weeks ago there was a free offer from Beneful Dog food brand for a sample of their dry kibble and their treats. So this is what I got in the mail. Yay for free stuff!
Got a small pack of food, good enough for a meal or two for all my dogs, and two treat chews per pack, and then a couple coupons to buy the product. I will try and post free offers like this from here on out as I see them.

Now for the fail. free

Like I said at the beginning of my blog I am doing my best to live a Credit free life. Pay down debt and so on. Well I'm still working out my monthly budget, and I needed a few items. I know I am just trying to justify I used a credit card. But I had very little dog food left, and no milk or eggs, and it could not wait for another pay day. So.. I dug the card out I hid so they are not easy access, and bought it. And I feel really bad about it, even though I know this is not a huge fail, it is still a fail.. next week, back to week one!

Another sunday and more coupons!

Here we are again another Sunday filled with new coupons, I have not gone through them all yet to see if there are some super deals, but That's on the list of my to do today!

Thursday I went out and did a giant eagle shopping trip, Got some super deals.
First off they had pot roasts BO GO, this is about the only time I stock up on meats,  even though I did not have a coupon for them, two roasts for $15 is a decent price, makes them a little over $1 a lb, meat these days is very pricey. Giant Eagle double their coupons up to $.99 cents, so you can make good use of sales, and the coupons, keep in mind, if an item is 2 for $5 or, 4 for $10 you can use a coupon for EACH item.
Fruit loops were 2 for $5 I had two $.70 cent off coupons, each doubled. making them $.80 each.
Texas toast was $2.69 I had a $.50 cent off coupon making it $1.69
Pasta Helper $1.69 each with $.50 cent coupon, making it $.69
ranch dip $1.19 coupon $.75 coupon off two. $.70 cents for two

I got a bunch more, but you can see the theme here.

You have to start clipping and printing coupons, even if you don't need something at that moment, Having the coupons in your coupon stock helps for trips like these for staples in the house.

Coupon Sunday!

That's right folks! it is Sunday!
That means all the new sales and coupons come out for the week, except for a few stores that post new sales for Thursdays such as Giant Eagle and Marc's. That being said I generally look at the coupons from the paper inserts early so I know if there is a SUPER coupon or a rare one that means I should run out to the corner and buy a few papers just to get the great deal. Sadly this Sunday no such luck, I have not seen anything other than your run of the mill coupons this Sunday at all. That being said there is always a good deal to be had anyway.

That being said there are still some great deals being offered from coupons.com
You can go to thekrazycouponlady.com to find your store and see what the best deals are for you this week, or just open up the sales fliers for more free and almost free goods. I have found though that some of the sales posted are not available in this sate, as are some of the products.

I will keep you posted on any shopping trips I go on and any super deals I find!

Another day another test trial and I would say a win!

Today I went to target, and all though I spent a bit more than I had intended everything was on sale that I purchased, and everything is needed today or in the very near future. Here is my hall!

For $31.16 I got 2 new shirts for work, cheese crackers, package baby bella mushrooms, jar Pasta sauce, box of pasta, Bag of Apples, 1.5lb of grapes, 1lb of hamburger meat. 2 packages of deli Ham. 4 packages of sliced cheese, and a divider file for filing receipts or what not.

Here is the receipt as well so you can see this is easy to do. This is no joke! I am well on my way to free, just need a little more time! I Mainly used the texted coupons from the target mobile offers coupons, but I did have three paper coupons I used as well.
I have added color coding so you can see what coupons went with witch items.
I got two work shirts, they normally retail for $9.99 each, they were on sale for $6.00 each and I had 1 $3.00 off coupon. getting two shirts for under the price of 1.
I had $.50 cents off 1 cracker
$.75 cents off one pasta
$.75 cents off one pasta sauce
$1.00 off one vegetable over $1
$1.00 off one Fruit over $1
$1.00 off one meat over $1
another $1.00 off fresh produce over $5.00
two $1.50 off two cheeses
$1.00 off two deli meats

the expand file was on sale for $.50 cents

Now, I was looking to make a meal tomorrow that will last me a few days so I can get off work come home and have something filling and healthy.
the Pasta with coupon was $.25cents
the Pasta sauce was $.25 cents
the Mushrooms were $.97 cents
the hamburger meats was $2.89
That is a total of $4.36 for a meal that will last 3-4 evenings. I can add cheese and bread to vary it. But its all on the receipt!.

All it takes is a little time, and you too can serve a family meal for under $5 or make enough to have a home cooked meal for more than one evening!

Everyone should have some goals

Goals are a good thing to have in place, it gives you something to strive for and a sense of accomplishment when you get there. Remember these aren't made in stone, you can adapt, change, and start over at any time, ad one, there is no golden rule for your own personal goal. Just make your goals achievable, some short term, some mid term and of course some long term and over all goals.

This is what I would like to achieve as of right now.

Under a year- Pay off car

Short term,  1-2 years

Learn to get to 80% or better in food shopping couponing, as well as some dry goods.

Get credit card and medical bills lowered at least 25% of what they are now.

De stress by remembering life could be far worse, and can only get better if I work hard.

Mid term, 3-5 years

Pay off medical bills and credit cards.

Have a firm understanding of how to coupon for myself and my family to help out as needed.

Start relaxing even more without all the excess to worry about

Long term, 5+ years

Live debt free (mortgage not included unless I'm REALLY good)

Be living life to the fullest without bills looming over my head

Nothing to hard to achieve or far fetched. And I can add and specify more clearly as I start to get closer to achieving my goals.

Some Clarifications

A few people have asked me to clarify some items. I'm sure you have seen the show on TLC extreme Couponers. That is not what I'm talking about here. I don't not have a spare room filled with food and products, I have not traded a space to park my car to put toilet paper, or kicked the dogs outside to store potato chips!

What I am talking about here is smart shopping, I have a small corner in my kitchen I stack extra boxes of pasta and cereal, and I have six or so bottles of laundry detergent stacked besides the washer. Beyond that I do not buy mass amounts of food. If there is a REALLY good deal I may stock up to a point, such as the laundry detergent. It was recently on sale at Marc's for $1.99 per 55 wash bottles. I had a coupon for $1 off two so I bought 4. When I get down to one bottle I will start looking for more sales.

And that goes for the cereal as well, I try not to get more than can be consumed in 6 months, just so that I'm not buying something that will waste. This week at Giant Eagle they have Big G cereals on sale 4 for $6. I had a $.50 on one box that doubled, and another for $1 off two boxes, So I got 4 boxes for $4. a dollar a box is not bad. If I would have had 4 of the $.50 off coupons they would have been free. But I could not find any to print. See how this works?

If you want to start yourself a stock pile, by all means, But this blog is about budgeting, so unless you are getting all the items for free I see a lot of excess as wasted money.

Another thing to clarify, I do not buy items just because they are on sale or free. If I don't need it I'm not going to spend extra time that I really don't have on it, just because it is free. Now that being said. If I learn to get everything or just about everything for free, or the item I don't need causes my other items to be free then yes, I would pick it up and pass it along to friends, family or a donation place. It would be lovely to give back to the community but I have not gotten that far into my couponing.

Now, there is another thing to keep in mind. Some items are seasonal, and if you have the space, such as a deep freeze then stock up on food that lasts a long time. Pasta and pasta sauces go on super sales about twice a year. Butter, and sugar and broths are generally only on sale during the holidays, as are turkeys. But meat is not good overly long, after 3-4 months its tends to freezer burn, but that would get you turkey all winter long! Milk freezes for a while as well, those sales for 2 or 3 for $5
Stock up on a few gallons and be set for those long wintery nights were so not looking forward too coming up soon!

First attempts

I am really new to this, and im still learning the policies, and the ways to stack coupons and who lets you do such. Let me give you a couple examples. Cereal, for what it is it can be really costly. Lets say Giant Eagle has a sale, 4 general mills cereal for $10 that's a deal in itself, but you can usually find coupons, I save the single box coupons. So.. say you have 3 $.50 cent coupons, they double the coupons, so that is $3 in savings, So you get 4 boxes at $7, though not free its less than $2 a box.

There are some things you can get for free ALWAYS, You just have to know what you are looking for,
Razors, just watch for high dollar coupons, $3 and up and you can always find disposable packs for free some even make you some change back on your bill.
Feminine products. remember you need to look at the sizes of the boxes. and the Coupon, if it states you get $1 off any box. then you buy a small box, and its free. multiple coupons means multiple boxes.
Candy, You get the little .50-.75 off candy sometimes more, You know those little tasty candies at check out? most at a $1 or less. so again, giant eagle will double the coupon, and you get a free candy bar!
There are many more Im still learning as I go, here are two examples of shopping trips I have done. and documented. none are are 90% savings but quite a nice savings anyway.

This is what I got for $35 and change. 5 bottles of coke zero, box of 25 trash bags, bag of fries, 2 boxes garlic toast, Loaf of bread, bag of hamburger buns. 4 fresh Hamburger patties, 1 pint of straw berries, 4 ears of corn, 1 cool whip, 2 Pouches of sliced cheese, 1 chec mix, 2 cream cheeses, 1 half gallon ice cream, I dish soap, 1 hand soap and 1 laundry detergent.

On this time I got for $16 and change 3 bottles of laundry detergent, 2 mouth washes, a toothpaste and two liquid lipsticks.

Step one! Understanding what to do!

I am still learning the entire process, and with help from sites, friends, and just trial and error I am starting to understand how to make the whole saving process work, and all though you will have to change up some items for yourself there are many ways to start shaving off from your weekly, and monthly costs.

#1 Make a budget, a REAL one and an Honest and achievable one. Don't be crazy you can always make a new one and adjust as you go along.
I have started at $40-$60 a week, Which I think is still a bit high just for me, but I'm factoring in Gas, and feeding Cats, Dogs, Fish and Dart frogs. So they all need food and care as well. I also try and save extra change, and dollars for emergency, vets bills what ever will happen. Credit is a last resort, lock up the cards if you have to, Cash and debit cards only!

#2 Make a list of what you need for the week, as you go along, before any trip, know what the general cost is and make sure you stick to it. Don't shop hungry, and stay away from the extra deals!
Some like to make a monthly list, I'm still working and happy with a weekly list.

#3 Know where to find discounts, coupons, websites, text coupons, there are many sites out there that are free that will give you free printable coupons. I like these sites.

www.coupons.com
www.thekrazycouponlady.com  (this actually lines up coupons you can print or get out of the paper and freebies and all sorts of fun stuff with your favorite store, great for the person with not a lot of extra time.
www.mypoints.com  You can earn gift cards and extra coupons and points just by looking at emails, and taking surveys. Yes it works! I saved up for about 6 months and recently got a $50 gift card to Kohl's to treat myself to some new clothes.
mystayathomeadventures.com This is a link to my friends blog, who also shares a lot of savings and coupons for how to save.
You can also text Offers to 827438 if you Like shopping at target, and they will text you coupons to your phone to use in store.

#4 understand your stores and their coupons and coupon polices. Some stores double their coupons, some store will let you use a store coupon and a manufacture coupon on the same Item. These will all help you lower over all cost on items.

#5 don't get discouraged. It takes time and effort to learn how to get your bill lower and lower, keep at it, and set reachable goals for yourself.

Some place to start, The beginning is good!

Well, here it is, I'm starting this blog to help myself through a tough time, and hopefully it can help some others too. This is a hard time for a lot of people. I will tell you how I'm doing my best to save money, show my progress, my failures and hopefully reach a goal or many goals over the time I write this. So here we go.

I'm 33 I currently live with just pets, I have an OK job, I work long crappy hours, weekends and holidays, I generally work 6 days a week, sometimes more, and sometimes less. I could make a lot more, and I could be making a whole heck of a lot less. before you go on about well if you don't like it change jobs. I have tried, still looking, If you want to hand me a job with nights, weekends and holidays off with great pay by all means! Untill then, I do what I have to make ends meet.

I have never been well to do, and have always tried to be careful with my money, I don't have the savings to live off of if something happened which is probably why I am where I am today. Mind you its not a bad place. It can be terribly stressful and depressing at times, but it could be far worse. And I'm thankful for what I have. the problem started a little over two years ago. I got very sick, spent 6 weeks in the hospital, and another two months at home recovering.  Like I said, I did not have savings in the bank more than a small amount, and I was in between insurance companies having dropped due to crazy rate hikes. that's when it always happens though. My medical bills were over $250k. Some of the bills went into collections before I could even return to work.

There are programs set up based on what you make to help with payments, and even to absorb a good percentage of the medical costs, even with settling on some bills ( put them on credit BAD MOVE but you live and learn) I currently owe more than a new car.. and it will take many years to pay it off. I was not prepared to have to put a whole new *car* payment into my life. Unfortunately credit was all I had to live on while recovering, my family helped out as they could, but my parents are retired unless I was giving up at that point and moving home they did what they could.

So tighten my belt, don't go out much if ever. Don't eat out, don't spend money on anything you really don't need. Still not enough, You see all those coupon shows on TV there has to be some truth to it. And there is, and slowly I have been learning how to do it. Hoping to one day achieve 90% or higher in savings, I can then also hope to pay off debts faster and one day have a debt free life and a large weight off my shoulders. In  posts to come I will explain how I have started to save. thanks for reading!
